Serious collision at a level crossing in Schmelz - Lorry driver injured after collision with a train

How did the accident happen?

On Tuesday morning, there was a serious accident at a level crossing in Schmelz, Saarland. A lorry and a train collided, injuring the lorry driver whilst the train driver was unharmed.

According to initial findings from the police, the lorry driver ignored the flashing lights and half-barriers at the level crossing and drove onto the tracks. The train driver had no chance to brake in time and the train hit the lorry on the side.

What are the consequences of the accident?

The lorry driver was seriously injured and was taken to hospital. The train driver, on the other hand, was not injured.

The train line between Saarbrücken and Trier was closed for several hours due to the accident. During this time, Deutsche Bahn organised a rail replacement service.

The police are investigating the exact cause of the accident. According to the police, the lorry driver is likely to be charged with negligent bodily harm.

The lorry has been recovered and the railway line has been reopened.
